My current artistic process aims to harness the power of presence by gradually bringing digitally rendered characters into the physical world. This lion mask began with a simple sketch. From there the mask was modeled in Maya, and the mask surfaces were painted by projecting images created in Photoshop onto the model. I then took the file into a papercraft program called Pepakura Designer. This program allowed me to unfold my 3D model into a 2D printable pattern that is similar to origami. I then cut the 2D pattern on matte board with a laser cutter and folded the model in real life. Later, I coated the mask with fiberglass and resin to allow it to harden. Finally, I printed the 2D pattern of the mask that contained the digitally painted surfaces onto fabric and applied the fabric to the form.
